Take a walk with us, back in time
Perched on the edge of Oulton Broad with broad waters and passing boats like slow-moving postcards, the Wherry Hotel has been part of Suffolk’s waterside story since the late 19th century. On the site of an earlier hostelry, it was rebuilt in 1897 by George Mason into the gracious lakeside inn we recognise today, its windows and terraces taking in sweeping views over the Broad and the lock that links inland waters to the North Sea. In the early days it served as more than a resting place
By 1900 the Wherry was advertising itself as “the original fishing quarters”, where bait, boats and hospitality were all part of an angler’s perfect day on the water. Through the Edwardian era and beyond it witnessed the Broads’ rise as a playground for sailors, holiday-makers and families alike, while regattas and steamboat races enlivened summer weeks. Today, under thoughtful stewardship, the Wherry remains a warm refuge: classic food, good ales, cosy rooms and the timeless lure of water and sky, a reminder that travel and rest have always been kindred pursuits on the Broads
